About the Nunnery.
Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery is a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery located in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is situated on a hilltop in Kopan, near the famous Kopan Monastery. It is also known as the Kopan Nunnery. The nunnery was established in 1979 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who are the founders of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT).
The nunnery serves as a spiritual and educational center for Buddhist nuns. It provides the nuns with a conducive environment for study, practice, and personal development. It follows the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, which is the same tradition followed by the nearby Kopan Monastery.
The primary aim of Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery is to offer nuns the opportunity to receive a complete Buddhist education, similar to that provided to monks. The nuns engage in rigorous study of Buddhist philosophy, scriptures, meditation, and other related subjects. The curriculum includes teachings on various Buddhist topics, ritual practices, and meditation techniques.
The nunnery is one of a few nunneries that manufactures incense. All the incense is specially handmade and sold to support the operation of the nunnery.
